Shubman Gill provides update on Hardik Pandya's fitness and potential return

India captain Shubman Gill has shed light on the status of Hardik Pandya, whose extended absence from the international stage has become a significant talking point. Speaking ahead of the opening ODI against New Zealand in Auckland, Gill addressed questions regarding the all-rounder's fitness and his potential path back to the national team.

Pandya has not featured for India since the 2026 T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. While he has remained active in the Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians, he has been unavailable for several international commitments, including series against Afghanistan, Ireland, England, and the West Indies. His absence has continued into the current tour of New Zealand.

Path to recovery and domestic cricket

Gill confirmed that the team management maintains regular communication with the all-rounder. While acknowledging Pandya's unique skill set, the captain indicated that a return to competitive domestic cricket is the necessary next step for his reintegration into the squad.

The captain also revealed that a minor injury setback recently hampered Pandya's progress. According to Gill, the player suffered a niggle shortly before he was scheduled to participate in an India A match, which further delayed his return to the field. Gill expressed hope that Pandya would soon be able to secure some domestic game time to prove his readiness for international duty.

Addressing India's lower-order balance

Beyond the immediate fitness concerns, Gill highlighted the strategic value Pandya brings to the Indian lineup. The captain noted that the all-rounder’s eventual return would be instrumental in stabilizing the team's lower-order batting, specifically addressing the requirements at the No. 7 and No. 8 positions.

Despite the ongoing absence of such a key player, Gill expressed satisfaction with the current batting group as the team prepares for the upcoming ODI World Cup. India is set to begin a five-match ODI series against New Zealand at Eden Park on November 4, with subsequent fixtures scheduled in Wellington, Hamilton, and Mount Maunganui through November 15.
