Rajat Paliwal Century and Aman Chaudhary Spell Highlight Ranji Trophy Opening Day

Services captain Rajat Paliwal showcased his enduring class on Monday, anchoring his team with an unbeaten century during the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group C encounter against Delhi. Playing at the Air Force ground in Palam, Paliwal navigated a challenging surface to finish the day on 111 not out, providing a vital backbone for his side as they reached a total of 266 all out.

The veteran batter, who is approaching his 35th birthday, drew inspiration from the longevity of Jammu and Kashmir captain Paras Dogra. Paliwal’s composed innings proved essential, particularly as he steered Services from a precarious position of 158/7 to a more competitive total on a pitch expected to deteriorate as the match progresses.

Chaudhary shines for Delhi as Dubey dominates in Group A

While Paliwal stood firm, the day was defined by the emergence of 21-year-old left-arm spinner Aman Chaudhary. Making only his second first-class appearance, Chaudhary proved to be Delhi’s most effective weapon on a slow-turning track. He delivered a probing spell of 31 overs, ultimately finishing with figures of 4/79. His relentless approach proved difficult for the Services lineup to navigate, ensuring Delhi remained in the contest despite Paliwal’s resistance.

Reflecting on the state of the domestic game, Paliwal praised the current generation of talent, specifically highlighting the recent form of Delhi captain Ayush Badoni. He emphasized that despite the growing allure of T20 cricket, the depth of Indian domestic cricket remains significant, with players like Dogra continuing to serve as benchmarks for longevity and success.

Elsewhere in the Ranji Trophy, the Elite Group A clash between Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha saw a dramatic opening day with 14 wickets falling. Spinner Harsh Dubey produced a sensational performance, claiming nine wickets for 53 runs to bowl out the visitors for 209. In response, Madhya Pradesh struggled to find their footing, ending the day at 56 for four after 66.1 overs of play.
