Delhi Capitals sign 15-year-old Uma Kashvi in landmark WPL auction deal

The Women's Premier League (WPL) auction in Kochi on October 28 saw a significant milestone for youth cricket as 15-year-old Karnataka all-rounder Uma Kashvi was signed by the Delhi Capitals. At 15 years and 202 days, the right-arm off-spinner and middle-order batter has become the youngest player ever purchased in the history of the WPL auction, eclipsing the previous record held by Deeya Yadav.

While the teenager has already represented India Under-19 against Sri Lanka in 2026, her immediate participation in the WPL remains uncertain. The tournament schedule currently overlaps with the upcoming Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh and Nepal, a competition for which Kashvi is currently in contention.

A rapid rise through the ranks

Kashvi’s path to the professional stage has been marked by consistent dominance in domestic age-group cricket. During the 2025-26 Women's Under-15 One-Day Trophy, she established herself as a standout performer, finishing as the leading run-scorer with 516 runs at an extraordinary average of 172. Her campaign included three centuries and a half-century, highlighted by a blistering unbeaten 158 off just 66 balls against Manipur in January 2026, an innings that featured 23 fours and seven sixes.

Her leadership and all-round capabilities have been evident throughout her development. Beyond captaining Karnataka’s Under-15 side and the Bengaluru Blasters in the Maharani Trophy, she has proven her ability to perform under pressure. In a recent Under-19 T20 Trophy quarter-final against Vidarbha, she claimed 3/18 and contributed with the bat to secure a narrow six-run victory, earning Player of the Match honours.

Long-term vision for Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals head coach Jonathan Batty confirmed that the franchise has been tracking the youngster’s progress for some time. Emphasising that the signing is a strategic, long-term investment, Batty noted that the coaching staff views the 15-year-old as a work in progress rather than an immediate starter.

“She has been on our radar for a little while. Our scouts have watched her play extensively and shared some incredible feedback, and I have seen her play as well. We believe she could become an absolute superstar in the future,” Batty stated. The franchise intends to integrate her into their professional setup, allowing her to train alongside international stars and benefit from high-level coaching.

The addition of Kashvi, alongside fellow recruits Kiran Navgire, Nazma Khan, and Kirstie Gordon, completes the Delhi Capitals' 17-member squad for the upcoming season. As she transitions into the professional environment, the franchise aims to provide the necessary support to help the young talent eventually push for senior national recognition.
