New Zealand’s bowling stocks have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the fourth T20I against India, with pace spearhead Lockie Ferguson officially ruled out for the remainder of the series. The fast bowler sustained a low-grade tear to his right calf during the second match held at Hagley Oval.

Following medical scans, New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Thursday that Ferguson requires approximately one week of recovery time. In response to the injury, the team management has called up Matt Fisher as his replacement for the final stages of the series.

Bowling struggles and injury updates

The loss of Ferguson adds to the mounting pressure on the New Zealand bowling unit, which has struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting lineup throughout the series. India has already secured an unassailable 3-0 lead, having successfully chased down targets of 225, 180, and 199 in the opening three fixtures. While the pace attack has faced significant challenges, spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell have been noted for their consistent performances during the series.

In addition to Ferguson, the team provided an update on Matt Henry, who also sustained a low-grade tear in his right quadricep during the second T20I. Despite the setback, which requires a recovery period of one to two weeks, Henry remains on track to participate in the upcoming ODI series as originally planned under his workload management programme.

Meanwhile, Kyle Jamieson continues to follow his own workload management schedule in Wellington. He is set to feature for Canterbury in a Ford Trophy match this Saturday before linking back up with the national squad on Monday to prepare for the ODI series. New Zealand will look to improve their performance in the fourth T20I, which is scheduled to take place at a sold-out Eden Park in Auckland this Friday.
