Cristiano Ronaldo has secured the top spot in a global fan poll to determine the 'Ballon d'Or of All Time', a unique initiative launched by France Football. The voting process, which spanned the month of October, invited football supporters worldwide to select their favorite recipient from a shortlist of players who have claimed the prestigious Ballon d'Or trophy multiple times throughout their careers.

The initiative, dubbed the 'BOAT', allowed fans to participate in the selection process while also entering a draw for the opportunity to attend the 2027 Ballon d'Or ceremony. While Lionel Messi holds the record for the most official Ballon d'Or wins with eight, he finished second in this specific fan-driven ranking. Ronaldo’s victory was anchored by his 2007-08 campaign with Manchester United, the season in which he secured his first-ever Ballon d'Or.

A Landmark Achievement for Ronaldo

Ronaldo's 2008 award win was a standout moment in his career, defined by a prolific output of 42 goals across all competitions for the Premier League side. That performance saw him join an elite group of Manchester United legends to have won the award, following in the footsteps of George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton, and Denis Law. The fan vote reflected a strong preference for this specific season, placing it at the top of the final standings.

The final results highlighted a competitive field of legendary performances. Following Ronaldo’s 2008 win, the second and third positions were occupied by Lionel Messi’s 2012 campaign and Ronaldo’s 2017 season, respectively. The top ten list also featured various other years in which both players claimed the award, including Messi’s 2023 win and Ronaldo’s 2016 and 2014 successes. The list extended to include iconic figures such as Ronaldo Nazário, Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, and Marco van Basten, showcasing the depth of talent considered by the voters.

Recent Developments in the Ballon d'Or

While the 'Ballon d'Or of All Time' focused on historical greatness, the magazine continues to recognize current excellence. Harry Kane was recently named the recipient of the 2026 men’s Ballon d'Or. His recognition followed a highly productive season in which he netted 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich. Additionally, Kane played a pivotal role for England during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, contributing six goals as the team progressed to the tournament semifinals.
