India aims to reclaim Test cricket prestige as they face Sri Lanka in Colombo.

As the Indian cricket team gears up for a pivotal two-Test series against Sri Lanka, head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed confidence in his squad's readiness. Addressing the team during their first practice session at the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo, Gambhir emphasized their preparedness, stating, "Come 15th morning, whether we are batting first or bowling first, we will be absolutely ready with every answer to every question thrown at us." The team arrived in Sri Lanka 11 days prior to the series opener scheduled for August 15 in Galle, allowing ample time for acclimatization.

Preparation and Acclimatization

The Indian players have been granted several practice sessions, including a three-day warm-up match, to adapt to the humid conditions typical of Sri Lanka. Notably, six members of the 15-man squad have prior experience in the region, having participated in the India A vs Sri Lanka A series last month. This familiarity could prove advantageous as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

India's recent performances in Test cricket have been inconsistent. They drew a series in England (2-2) that many believed they could have won, followed by a disappointing 0-2 defeat against South Africa. The scheduling of these matches left the team with little time to adjust, resulting in a whitewash that raised concerns about their readiness. The subsequent one-off Test against Afghanistan did not provide the rigorous challenge needed to address these issues, as players transitioned quickly from the IPL to red-ball cricket.

Injury Concerns and Individual Preparations

Despite the challenges, the current squad appears well-rested and prepared to tackle the upcoming series. However, they will be without key players Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar for at least the first Test. The remaining 14 players are fit and eager to perform, supported by a group of net bowlers including Harsh Dubey, Tanush Kotian, Vipraj Nigam, and Shivang Kumar.

Several players have also taken the initiative to train individually in the lead-up to the series. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul practiced indoors in rain-affected Mumbai, while Shubman Gill had productive sessions in Chandigarh. Rishabh Pant even traveled to Ranchi to train with former captain MS Dhoni. To keep their hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship final alive, India must secure a 2-0 series victory in Sri Lanka. The next three weeks will be crucial for the team to address lingering questions and reclaim their former glory.
