John Turner, the fast bowler from England, announces his retirement from cricket at the age of 25.

John Turner, a fast bowler for England, has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the young age of 25, citing ongoing injury struggles as a significant factor in his decision. The Hampshire player, who made his international debut in 2024, had two years remaining on his county contract and previously held an ECB development contract until late last year.

Born in Johannesburg, Turner represented England in four international matches during a tour of the West Indies in late 2024, where he claimed three wickets across two One Day Internationals (ODIs) and two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Despite a promising start to his career, he has not played since June of last year due to a back stress fracture, which ultimately influenced his choice to retire.

In a heartfelt statement, Turner expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he received throughout his career. "It was always my dream to play professional and international cricket, and doing so for Hampshire and England has been nothing short of living out those same childhood dreams," he remarked. He acknowledged the difficulty of his decision, stating, "The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, as well as my injury record, naturally made me think of my future both as a cricketer and away from the game, and subsequently, I decided now was the right time to pursue my next challenge."

Turner reflected on his five years with Hampshire, describing them as the most rewarding of his life. "From the day I joined the club in pursuit of a dream, everyone was extremely welcoming, and this never changed," he noted. He expressed deep appreciation for the support he received, emphasizing that the belief the club had in him was invaluable. "I have experienced more over the last few years than I could ever imagine, and none of that would be possible without the support from everyone at the club," he added.

Before his cricketing career, Turner attended Hilton College in South Africa and later moved to the UK for university, utilizing his British passport, which he obtained through his English mother. He joined Hampshire in 2021 after a successful trial and earned his first call-up to the England team in 2023 following impressive performances in The Hundred.

As he steps away from the sport, Turner is now looking forward to the next phase of his life, leaving behind a legacy of determination and talent in the world of cricket.
