A primary focus of the review was the high frequency of player injuries, which the board intends to mitigate through adjustments to the upcoming Future Tours Programme (FTP). Saikia acknowledged that the current volume of matches has placed significant strain on the squad, necessitating a shift in how the board approaches international scheduling.
To better prepare for tours in SENA countries—South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia—the BCCI plans to integrate mandatory rest periods and dedicated acclimatization windows. This strategy aims to provide teams with sufficient preparation time, including friendly matches, before major series. Saikia emphasized that the board is committed to refining its Return to Play protocols, utilizing direct feedback from the team leadership to ensure players remain fit and available for selection.
Clarifying Leadership and Future Planning
The meeting also served to address speculation regarding team management and personnel. Saikia dismissed rumors concerning the future of the selection committee and confirmed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s absence from the meeting was due to travel logistics rather than any internal friction. Furthermore, he addressed questions regarding Rohit Sharma’s future, noting the batter's recent form—highlighted by a 138-run performance at Lord's—as evidence of his continued value to the side.
Regarding the Centre of Excellence, Saikia noted that while the position of Head of Sports Science and Medicine remains vacant, the facility continues to operate effectively with a team of 16 specialists. He stated that the board is actively seeking a highly qualified candidate for the role but maintained that current operations remain unaffected. Moving forward, the BCCI’s primary objective remains the development of a cohesive strategy to ensure peak performance in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
