He clarified that no such topics were on the agenda, stating that the board had no intentions of altering the current selection structure. Furthermore, the secretary dismissed claims that the BCCI was looking to appoint a new director of cricket for the men’s team, categorising such reports as mere rumours.
The primary objective of the meeting was to conduct a comprehensive review of India’s recent tours, including performances in England and Ireland, as well as the Test series in Sri Lanka. Saikia emphasised that the discussions were focused on long-term planning and mapping out the international calendar rather than immediate team selection or individual player combinations. He noted that the selectors themselves were not present, as those decisions remain within their specific remit for upcoming series.
Focusing on the 2027 ODI World Cup
With the 2027 ODI World Cup serving as the ultimate goal, the BCCI is now looking toward a demanding schedule. India’s immediate future includes a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan and participation in the Asian Games in Japan. This will be followed by a home series against the West Indies, consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is, and a significant multi-format tour of New Zealand featuring two Tests, five ODIs, and five T20Is.
The international calendar continues with a home series against Sri Lanka and a three-match ODI tour of Zimbabwe in January 2027. The period concludes with a major five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, scheduled to take place between January and March 2027. Saikia confirmed that the selectors will determine the appropriate team combinations for these assignments when they convene for their respective selection meetings.
