Reflecting on the transition, Nehra highlighted the distinct personalities of the two players. While both have navigated the challenges of leading a side with limited prior experience, Nehra compared their temperaments to the opposite ends of the spectrum, describing them as being like the north pole and south pole.

Nehra explained that while Pandya maintained an open line of communication and placed complete trust in the coaching staff, Gill adopts a more reserved and observant approach. According to the head coach, Pandya was always eager to engage in detailed discussions, particularly when results did not go as planned, making him a player with whom one could have extensive conversations.
In contrast, Gill is described as being quieter and more shy, yet highly focused. Nehra noted that while the current captain may not engage in the same volume of dialogue as his predecessor, his communication is consistently direct and to the point. Nehra emphasised that there is no right or wrong method, as each individual brings their own unique style to the role.
Development and future outlook
Despite the differences in their communication styles, Nehra remains confident in Gill’s growth as a leader. Having guided the team to an IPL final in 2026, Gill is viewed as a work in progress who is steadily gaining the necessary experience to excel at the highest level. Nehra pointed out that at 26-27 years of age, and with only a few seasons of captaincy under his belt, Gill’s capacity to observe and learn will serve him well.
Nehra also drew parallels between the two regarding their lack of extensive prior coaching or captaincy experience, noting that both have had to learn on the job. With Gill now taking on leadership responsibilities for India across two formats, Nehra believes the young batter is on a positive trajectory and will only continue to improve as he gains more time in the role.
