PBG Alaskan Knights Edge Alpine APL Pipers as Magnus Carlsen Bounces Back in Global Chess League

The atmosphere at the Lalit Ashok was electric on Monday as two of the greatest figures in chess history, Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen, faced off during the third day of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League. While the encounter between the former world champions drew significant attention, the result ultimately favored the Norwegian, who secured a win after Anand lost on time from an equal position.

Despite the individual setback for the five-time world champion, his team, the PBG Alaskan Knights, managed to secure a crucial 9-7 victory over the Alpine APL Pipers. This result marked the first defeat of the tournament for Carlsen’s side, who had previously maintained a perfect record in their opening two matches.

Following four rounds of play, the Alpine APL Pipers remain at the top of the league standings with nine match points and 43 game points. The competition remains tight in the chasing pack, with four teams—Mumba Masters, American Gambits, Alaskan Knights, and Ganges Grandmasters—all sitting on six match points. The Mumba Masters bolstered their position with a 12-3 victory over the Ganges Grandmasters, while the two-time defending champion, Triveni Continental Kings, secured their first win of the tournament by defeating the PBG Alaskan Knights 11-6.
