Abhishek Sharma Smashes Record as Fastest to 2,000 T20I Runs

Abhishek Sharma has etched his name into the record books, becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 T20I runs in terms of balls faced. The explosive opener achieved this significant milestone during the third T20I against the West Indies in Indore on Sunday, surpassing the previous benchmark held by Suryakumar Yadav.

Sharma reached the 2,000-run mark in just 1,024 deliveries, comfortably eclipsing the 1,164 balls taken by Suryakumar. The record was previously held by Australia’s Aaron Finch, who required 1,283 balls to reach the same tally. This achievement underscores Sharma's aggressive approach and his ability to score at a rapid pace in the shortest format of the game.

A Blistering Knock in Indore

The milestone was part of a high-impact performance from Sharma, who struck 69 runs off just 30 deliveries. His innings was defined by clean hitting, featuring six boundaries and five maximums. Following the early loss of Sanju Samson for only three runs, Sharma took the initiative to stabilize the Indian innings, forming a crucial partnership with Ishan Kishan to put the West Indies bowlers under immediate pressure.

Despite his dominance, Sharma’s stay at the crease ended when he was dismissed by Shamar Springer. Attempting a pull shot off a short delivery, the batter mistimed the effort, resulting in a top edge that was caught by the bowler. This wicket triggered a brief collapse for the hosts, as India lost three wickets in the span of 10 deliveries while adding only nine runs, allowing the visitors to regain a foothold in the contest.

The match, held in Indore, saw the West Indies win the toss and elect to bowl first. India entered the fixture aiming to reclaim the lead in the five-match series, which had been levelled by the West Indies following a successful chase in Ranchi. The Indian side featured a lineup including captain Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Axar Patel, while the West Indies were led by Shai Hope.
