The debate surrounding
Samson’s recent dip in form follows a more productive period where he registered back-to-back fifties against Afghanistan. However, his struggle to find rhythm in the opening match of the current series against the West Indies in Lucknow—where he managed only nine runs—has reignited discussions regarding his spot at the top of the order. The team has reverted to the opening partnership of Samson and Abhishek Sharma, the same duo that featured during India's successful T20 World Cup campaign.
Chopra dismisses selection speculation
Addressing the growing calls for young talent to be fast-tracked into the side, Chopra took to his YouTube channel to clarify that swapping Samson for Sooryavanshi is not a viable path for the team management. He argued that constantly questioning a player's place after every minor failure is unsustainable for the side's stability.
“You will have to agree that it cannot happen that he plays now, and if we start saying this about Sanju Samson after every match, then we are damned,” Chopra stated. He emphasized that the team must avoid the trap of making knee-jerk personnel decisions based on short-term form, noting that such an approach would make managing the squad nearly impossible.
All-rounder selection and team strategy
Beyond the opening slot, Chopra also touched upon the potential inclusion of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. While he personally advocates for Reddy’s involvement to aid his development, Chopra acknowledged a disconnect between his perspective and the current strategy employed by the team management.
“I seriously think about Nitish Kumar Reddy for sure. I wanted you to play Nitish from the start itself, because how will you prepare him? However, that's my thinking and might be your thinking as well, but the Indian team is not thinking like that,” he observed.
India currently holds a 1-0 lead in the five-match series following an eight-wicket victory in the opener. As the squad prepares for the second T20I in Ranchi on Friday, October 9, the focus remains on whether Samson can convert his starts into meaningful contributions. Having previously faced selection pressure after a tour of the UK, the wicketkeeper-batter is under scrutiny to prove his consistency as the series progresses.
