Fifteen-year-old
Facing Japan’s second seed,
A Hard-Fought Path to the Final
The semi-final was a display of endurance and tactical precision from both competitors. Patri established early momentum by claiming the opening game 21-14. However, Watanabe responded emphatically in the second game, leveling the match with a 21-11 win to force a decisive third set.
The final game proved to be an intense, neck-and-neck battle as both players fought for a spot in the championship match. Ultimately, it was the 15-year-old who maintained her composure during the closing stages, edging out her opponent 21-19 to seal the win. According to the Badminton Association of India, this victory marks a significant milestone for the nation’s presence in the tournament.
Looking Ahead to the Gold Medal Match
Patri’s achievement follows a lineage of Indian success at the Youth Olympic Games, with HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen having previously secured silver medals in the boys' singles category in 2010 and 2018, respectively. Aditya Joshi also reached the semi-finals in 2014.
The upcoming final presents a formidable challenge for the Indian teenager, as she is set to face China’s Yi Xin Zhang. Zhang, who enters the match following a gold medal performance at the World Junior Championships, previously defeated Patri in the quarter-finals of the Asia Junior Championships earlier this year. In that encounter, the Chinese player secured a straight-games victory, winning 21-18, 21-16. Patri will now look to reverse that result and claim the gold medal in her final appearance.
