A Hard-Fought Breakthrough in Chennai
The match against the 277th-ranked Falkowska was a tense affair defined by inconsistent serving and a high volume of unforced errors from both sides of the net. Rajeshwaran Revathi endured a nervous start, opening the match with a double fault and dropping her serve early. However, the teenager displayed remarkable resilience, consistently finding ways to break back whenever her opponent gained momentum.
The opening set was a chaotic sequence of five consecutive service breaks. After falling behind 4-2, the Indian youngster rallied to win three straight games. She eventually clinched the set 6-4 after Falkowska faltered under pressure, committing two double faults and a forehand error before sending a final cross-court attempt wide.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with both players struggling to maintain rhythm on their serves. Rajeshwaran Revathi, however, maintained a more aggressive approach, looking to dictate play whenever possible. The decisive moment arrived in the eighth game, where she secured a crucial break to take a 5-3 lead. Serving for the match, the 17-year-old required three match points before Falkowska finally netted a forehand, confirming the historic result.
Building Momentum on the Professional Circuit
This quarterfinal appearance is the latest milestone in a breakout season for Rajeshwaran Revathi. The teenager recently made headlines in October by winning her maiden W35 singles title in Lagos, Portugal, where she navigated the qualifying rounds without dropping a set. Her success in Portugal also saw her claim the doubles title alongside Yelyzaveta Kotliar, making her the youngest Indian to secure a professional singles title since Sania Mirza.
Currently training at the Elite Tennis Center in southern France following a move from the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, the youngster is quickly establishing herself as a rising talent. While the Chennai Open field remains competitive—with other notable results including Polina Kudermetova’s straight-sets victory over Oksana Selekhmeteva—Rajeshwaran Revathi’s progression stands out as a major development for the future of Indian women’s tennis.
