Alexander Zverev suffers shock defeat in first match as world No. 1

Alexander Zverev’s debut as the world No. 1 player in men’s tennis ended in an unexpected exit at the Paris Masters on Wednesday. The German, who ascended to the top of the rankings on Monday following a standout season that included maiden Grand Slam titles at the French Open and the US Open, was defeated in the second round by Lorenzo Musetti.

Despite the fast indoor conditions typically favoring his aggressive serve and powerful groundstrokes, Zverev struggled to find his rhythm against the Italian. Musetti secured a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory, dominating the match with 29 winners compared to Zverev’s 25, while maintaining better control by committing only 12 unforced errors against the German’s 21. The match concluded emphatically with an ace from Musetti.

Musetti shines as tournament shake-up continues

Reflecting on the result, Musetti expressed surprise at his own performance against the top-ranked player. He noted that while the first set was tightly contested, his ability to maintain focus at 5-2 proved decisive. The Italian credited his success to a strong run of five consecutive points that shifted the momentum in his favor.

The tournament saw further drama elsewhere in the draw. Frances Tiafoe, a three-time US Open semifinalist, suffered a narrow defeat to Frenchman Quentin Halys, losing 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (9) after failing to convert four match points. This result had significant implications for the season-ending ATP Finals, as Tiafoe’s loss ensured Arthur Fils qualified for the event in Turin. Fils becomes the first French player to reach the season finale since Gael Monfils in 2016.

Other notable results included a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory for Tommy Paul over Daniel Merida, while Alex de Minaur and Learner Tien were both eliminated in straight sets. As the competition progresses, attention remains on the race for the final spots in the ATP Finals, with Novak Djokovic among those looking to secure his place by reaching the semifinals in Paris. Only two positions remain for the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from November 15-22.
