Tanvi Patri Makes History as First Indian Woman to Reach Youth Olympics Badminton Semifinals

Tanvi Patri has etched her name into the record books at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, becoming the first Indian woman to advance to the badminton semifinals. The 15-year-old talent from Odisha secured her place in the final four with a clinical performance on Wednesday, overcoming Thailand's Kungkaew Kakanik in straight games, 21-17, 21-13.

This milestone victory continues a remarkable run for the Bengaluru-based shuttler, who trains at the Centre for Excellence. Patri’s progression to the semifinals places her in elite company, as she joins a select group of Indian male players—HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, and Aditya Joshi—who have previously reached this stage of the competition. While Prannoy and Sen both secured silver medals in their respective editions, Patri now aims to go one step further as she prepares for her upcoming clash against Japan's Yuzuno Watanabe.

A Path to the Semifinals

Patri’s journey to the knockout stages was defined by consistency and dominance. She entered the quarterfinals after topping Group F with a flawless record. Her final group match saw her defeat Australia's Smrithi Adepu 21-4, 21-12, a result that followed earlier victories against South Korea's Jeong Yu Jang and Mexico's Sara Patricia Delgado Gonzallex. The win against Adepu was particularly significant, serving as a winner-takes-all encounter to determine the group leader.

The upcoming semifinal against Watanabe presents a formidable challenge for the young Indian. The two players previously met at the 2024 Pathum Thani Junior International Series in Thailand, where Watanabe emerged victorious in straight games, 21-14, 21-10. Patri, however, enters this rematch with significant momentum, having already demonstrated her ability to perform under pressure on the international stage.

Building on Continental Success

The teenager's success in Dakar follows a standout performance earlier this year at the Badminton Asia U-17 and U-15 Championships in Chengdu, China. By clinching the girls' singles U-17 title in an all-Indian final, she became the first Indian player to secure both continental U-15 and U-17 crowns. Her current form in Senegal suggests that she is successfully translating that regional dominance to the global Youth Olympic platform.

The badminton competition in Dakar, which features 32 players in both men's and women's singles, is structured into a group stage followed by a knockout phase. With the semifinals now set, the focus shifts to the medal matches, which are scheduled to conclude on November 5. As the first Indian woman to reach this stage, Patri remains in contention for a historic podium finish.
