PV Sindhu and Ayush Shetty Triumph at BWF World Championships, While Lakshya Sen Faces Unexpected Elimination

In a surprising turn of events at the BWF World Championships held in New Delhi, Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen faced an unexpected exit in the second round after losing to Garret Tan of the USA. The match, which took place on Wednesday, ended with scores of 21-19, 19-21, and 17-21, marking a disappointing outcome for Sen, who had previously secured a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships.

Sen struggled to keep pace with Tan, a former world junior No. 1, who showcased impressive speed and tactical play throughout the match. Reflecting on his performance, Sen expressed his disappointment, stating, "It was a very tough match. I gave my all whatever I had in my tank. I was also exhausted physically in the third game. I will give a lot of credit to him; he played a solid game. I am a little disappointed though I gave my all in the end, but it wasn't enough. He was just a better player today." Despite the setback, Sen remains optimistic about future competitions, acknowledging the importance of upcoming tournaments.

Sindhu and Shetty Advance

In contrast to Sen's early exit, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and rising star Ayush Shetty successfully advanced to the pre-quarterfinals. Sindhu, who is aiming for her sixth world championship medal, secured a victory against Canada's Wen Yu Zhang with scores of 21-16 and 21-17. The ninth-seeded Sindhu is set to face China's third seed, Wang Zhi Yi, in the next round.

Meanwhile, Shetty delivered a commanding performance against Sri Lanka's Dumindu Abeywickrama, winning decisively with scores of 21-8 and 21-10. He will now prepare for a challenging match against Indonesia's Alwi Farhan.

Mixed Doubles and Other Matches

The Indian men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also progressed to the pre-quarterfinals after receiving a walkover in their opening match. The fifth-seeded duo was set to compete against Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle, who withdrew due to an injury sustained by Dunn during a mixed doubles match earlier in the day.

In mixed doubles action, the pair of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila advanced with a convincing win over Macau's Leong Iok Chong and Ng Weng Chi, finishing with scores of 21-11 and 21-11. However, young player Unnati Hooda, making her debut at this prestigious event, was eliminated after a hard-fought match against Canada's 12th seed Michelle Li, losing 21-11, 9-21, and 21-23. Additionally, the men's doubles team of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun fell to Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Ki Dong Ju with scores of 17-21 and 14-21.
