Lakshya: Always Striving to Keep Up

In a surprising turn of events, Lakshya Sen faced a challenging defeat in the second round of the tournament, where he was outplayed by Garret Tan. The Indian badminton star, currently ranked World No. 14, struggled to find his rhythm against the young competitor, who showcased a commanding performance throughout the match.

After the match, Sen acknowledged Tan's superior play, stating, “It was a good match, lot of credit to Tan, he played a solid game. Towards the end of the third game, both of us were completely exhausted. I gave my all but it wasn’t enough and I am a little disappointed.” He reflected on the match, noting that he was often on the defensive, saying, “He was dominant throughout and I was constantly playing cover up with the points. I had my chances but was always under pressure. Both his attack and defence were solid.”

Garret Tan's Remarkable Performance

Garret Tan, an 18-year-old rising star, not only celebrated the biggest victory of his career but also dealt with an on-court medical scare. “I went for a slide and hit my head a little bit and wasn’t feeling very well but I am speechless right now,” he shared, expressing his astonishment at the outcome. Despite the setback, Tan focused on his performance, emphasizing his determination to play his best without being intimidated by his opponent. “I just wanted to go and play my best without thinking of who was in front of me,” he added.

When asked about the pivotal moments in the match, Tan revealed his strategic approach. “In the third game, I kept hitting on one side and he kept preparing, and then the last few points, I just changed direction and it worked,” he explained. His tactical shift proved effective, allowing him to seize control at a crucial juncture. As he reflected on his unexpected success, Tan humorously noted, “I was supposed to leave on Friday but I guess...” leaving the statement open-ended, hinting at the potential for further achievements in the tournament.
