Sjoerd Marijne promotes team cohesion by using 'unity' bands inspired by Indian folklore as India strives for victory in the Hockey World Cup.

Marijne draws on Indian folklore to foster team unity ahead of the Hockey World Cup.

In a display of unity and team spirit, the Indian women's hockey team, led by head coach Sjoerd Marijne, has adopted a distinctive red-and-yellow band as they prepare for their Pool D match against South Africa in the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026. The team, which took to the field thirty minutes prior to the game, showcased this new symbol of togetherness at Marijne's insistence, with every player and support staff member donning the band.

Marijne, who returned to coach the team in February after a previous four-year tenure, is focused on rebuilding the players' confidence and belief. Forward Lalremsiami praised Marijne's leadership, stating, “Sjoerd is back and he has a lot of faith in the team. He has instilled positive qualities in the team.” Senior players, including Navneet Kaur and Salima Tete, echoed this sentiment, noting that the younger squad has shed its apprehension when facing more formidable opponents.

Symbol of Unity and Motivation

In an effort to strengthen the team's bond, Marijne drew inspiration from Indian folklore, introducing the concept of the unity band during a team meeting. “I gave it to the girls because I have seen many people wear this; it’s a symbol of unity in India,” he explained. The coach emphasized that the band serves as a constant reminder of teamwork, discipline, and focus. Lalremsiami elaborated on the significance of the band, stating, “He told us that when we see this both on and off the field it should remind us that we are not alone. Whenever we see it, it’s giving us motivation.”

While the tangible effects of the colored bands may be difficult to measure, the results on the field suggest a positive impact. India recently held world No. 4 China to a 2-2 draw and secured a commanding 6-1 victory over South Africa, positioning them at the top of Pool D. With a draw against England needed to advance to the second round, the team is on track to meet the realistic goals set by Marijne before the tournament commenced.
