Nick Kyrgios Faces Suspension Following Positive Cocaine Test: 'I Made A Significant Error'

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios publicly acknowledged a significant error in judgment on Wednesday after receiving a provisional suspension due to a positive cocaine test. The 31-year-old athlete, who made headlines for reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022, failed a doping test conducted during an ATP event in Mallorca on June 22. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory detected benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, in Kyrgios' system on July 17, 2026.

In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Kyrgios accepted full responsibility for his actions, expressing remorse to his fans, family, sponsors, and particularly to the younger audience that looks up to him. "I made a huge mistake," he stated. "I’m sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors and everyone close to me. Above all, I’m sorry to the kids who follow me. I know the example this sets and I’m deeply disappointed in myself."

Career Highlights and Challenges

Kyrgios, renowned for his explosive serve and powerful groundstrokes, has claimed seven ATP singles titles and achieved a career-high ranking of 13 in 2016. His most notable Grand Slam performance occurred at Wimbledon in 2022, where he reached the final but ultimately fell to Novak Djokovic in four sets. However, his career has been marred by a series of injuries that have significantly impacted his performance on the court. Currently ranked 919th, Kyrgios has had limited participation in singles matches in recent years.

In January, he candidly admitted that he may never return to his previous form. Throughout his career, Kyrgios has faced numerous injuries affecting various parts of his body, including his right elbow, left wrist, hip, knees, shoulders, and collarbone. He has undergone multiple surgeries, including a complete reconstruction of his right wrist in 2024. Reflecting on the toll these injuries have taken on him, Kyrgios stated, "The injuries have taken a huge toll on me both physically and mentally." Despite this, he emphasized that such challenges do not excuse his recent actions.

Looking Ahead

In light of the suspension, which has been effective since August 4, the ITIA has stated that Kyrgios is prohibited from participating in, coaching at, or attending any events organized or sanctioned by World Tennis, WTA, ATP, the Grand Slams, or any national association. Kyrgios expressed a desire to use this experience as a turning point, stating, "However, the good news is that this has given me a wake-up call. I’m sorry, I’ll do the work and come back better."
