Suraj Meena Makes History with Second-Place Finish at Silk Route Ultra Ladakh Marathon

Suraj Meena has achieved a significant milestone in ultra-distance running, securing a second-place finish at the prestigious Silk Route Ultra Ladakh Marathon. The Rajasthan-based athlete completed the grueling 122km course in 12 hours and 35 minutes, marking a standout performance for a non-Ladakhi participant in the high-altitude event.

The achievement represents a substantial improvement on previous benchmarks for runners from outside the region. Reflecting on the accomplishment, Meena noted that the previous record for a non-Ladakhi competitor stood at 15 hours and six minutes, highlighting the difficulty of maintaining pace in the challenging environment of Ladakh.

Overcoming Altitude and Endurance Challenges

The race presented unique obstacles, primarily due to the extreme elevation and the resulting impact on oxygen levels. Meena explained that the physical toll of high-altitude running required careful tactical adjustments. After leading the pack until the 40km mark, he encountered significant elevation changes that necessitated a shift in his approach.

To manage the thinning air and physical exhaustion, Meena adopted a strategic run-walk method. This measured pace allowed him to maintain his position without overexerting himself during the most demanding sections of the course. His success was the culmination of a month of dedicated high-altitude training in the region, which he identified as essential for his performance.

This year’s race marks Meena’s third appearance at the Ladakh Marathon. His journey in the event began with a full marathon in 2022, followed by a participation in the KC category last year. Beyond his performance on the track, Meena has demonstrated immense dedication to his craft, including a 2,400km cycling journey from Jaipur to Ladakh in 2024, which he completed in 12 days. He later returned to Jaipur via Kashmir, covering 1,500km in another 12-day cycling stint, further showcasing his commitment to endurance sports.
