Global sports brand PUMA has officially launched its Project3 running initiative in India, marking the first time the performance-focused programme has been brought to the country. The project is designed to support 50 ambitious marathon runners through a comprehensive 12-week training regime, with the primary goal of helping participants secure new personal bests at a marathon in Mumbai scheduled for January 2027.
The initiative arrives as India’s running community experiences a significant shift toward competitive performance and international participation. Data from the running publication Geeks On Feet highlights this trend, noting that participation by Indian runners in the six World Marathon Majors rose from 459 in 2014 to 1,673 in 2025. Furthermore, more than 500 Indian athletes achieved sub-three-hour marathon times during the 2025 calendar year.
A Structured Path to Global Competition
Selected participants in the Project3 programme will receive access to PUMA’s latest performance-grade footwear, including the Deviate NITRO™ Elite 4 and the Fast-R NITRO™ Elite 3. Beyond equipment, the 12-week curriculum incorporates structured training schedules, professional nutrition guidance, recovery protocols, and expert performance advice. Following the Mumbai event, five runners will be chosen for an opportunity to compete at a marathon in London in April 2027.
Ram Sridharan, Managing Director of PUMA India, noted that the programme is a direct response to the increasing ambition of local runners. He stated that the initiative aims to provide the necessary support to help build a stronger pool of Indian marathoners capable of competing at an international level. Globally, Project3 has already supported nearly 1,000 runners since its inception in 2025, providing sub-elite athletes with resources typically reserved for the elite tier of the sport.
Expert Coaching and Strategic Partnerships
To facilitate the programme, PUMA has entered a partnership with YOSKA, which will serve as the Training and Technology Partner. Deepak Raj, the founder and CEO of YOSKA and an experienced long-distance runner, has been appointed as the Head Coach for Project3 India. Raj will oversee the training progression of the 50 selected runners, focusing on unlocking their potential and raising the standard of
The initiative is further bolstered by the involvement of Ultrahuman, which joins as the official Wearables Partner. The company will provide performance-focused wearable technology to assist runners in monitoring their progress throughout the 12-week preparation period. By integrating technology, professional coaching, and specialized gear, the programme seeks to bridge the gap between local talent and the global marathon stage.
