The WTA 250 tennis tournament, which has been a staple of the sporting calendar in Chennai, is set for a significant relocation. Starting in 2027, the event will move to Manila, Philippines, marking the first time the country will host a tour-level WTA event. The transition is scheduled to take place during the same November window previously occupied by the Chennai event.

The upcoming edition of the Chennai Open is confirmed to proceed as planned, running from November 2 to 8 at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam. However, this will be the final time the tournament is held in the Indian city before the license shifts to the Philippines for the 2027 season, with the new event slated for November 1 to 7.

Capitalising on the Rise of Alexandra Eala

The decision to bring a WTA 250 event to Manila is heavily influenced by the emergence of 21-year-old Filipino tennis talent Alexandra Eala. Currently ranked 18th in the world, Eala has become a central figure in the sport's growth within the region. Stakeholders are eager to leverage her rising profile to establish a permanent WTA footprint in the Philippines.

Alastair Garland, managing director of the tennis division at Octagon—the sports agency that holds the tournament license—confirmed that Eala’s success played a pivotal role in the strategic move. According to Garland, the appeal of Manila as a host city is directly linked to the opportunity to build on the momentum generated by the young star and the expanding interest in professional tennis among local fans.

Tournament History and Future Outlook

Chennai first hosted a WTA 250 tournament in 2022 under a single-year license. Following its initial success, the city welcomed the event for a second time last year after it was relocated from Mexico. The shift to Manila represents the next phase for the tournament license holders, who are looking to build upon the success of the WTA 125 event that was held in the Philippines earlier this year in January.
