Tamil Nadu Government Provides Significant Support to Chennai Open Event

The Chennai Open is officially set to return for its second consecutive year, following a significant announcement from the Tamil Nadu Government regarding financial backing for the event. On Tuesday, officials confirmed a support package of ₹10 crore for the WTA 250 tournament, effectively dispelling any doubts about its future. This development comes after extensive discussions held in June between Vijay Amritraj, president of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), and Sports Minister Aadhav Arjuna, along with representatives from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).

Amritraj had previously estimated that the total cost to host the tournament would be around ₹20 crore, proposing a collaborative funding model where the state would contribute half of the required amount. The recent government commitment aligns perfectly with this proposal, providing the necessary financial foundation for the TNTA to move forward with organizing the third edition of the Chennai Open.

Participants can look forward to a competitive field, with a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles competition. The total financial commitment for the tournament is set at $283,347. Details regarding the player lineup, including Indian wildcards, will be disclosed as the event date approaches. The Chennai Open last took place from October 27 to November 2, 2025, marking the return of WTA Tour action to the city after a three-year hiatus.
