AITA sets maximum age of 70 for members of the Executive Committee.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has officially established a maximum age limit of 70 years for its Executive Committee members. This decision was made during an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on July 26, where the organization sought to adopt a new constitution. The meeting revealed significant divisions among members regarding the age limit, with some advocating for an increase to 75 years, citing the International Tennis Federation’s constitution, which does not specify an age ceiling.

The vote at the EGM was notably close, prompting a delay in announcing the results until a thorough review could be conducted. Ultimately, interim president Chintan Parikh communicated the outcome on Friday, revealing that 25 votes favored maintaining the 70-year limit, while 22 votes supported raising it to 75. Under the new regulations, any individual wishing to join the Executive Committee must be under 70 years old at the time of nomination. However, they are permitted to serve a full four-year term even if they reach the age of 70 during their tenure.

Chintan Parikh, who is also approaching the age limit himself, will need to navigate the upcoming elections, which are mandated to occur by September 30 under the new constitutional framework. The AITA is required to submit the finalized constitution to the Delhi High Court prior to the next hearing scheduled for August 14, ensuring compliance with legal standards and governance protocols.
