Barcelona and Real Madrid Compete for Rodri as Man City Turns Down Offers from Both Clubs

In a dramatic transfer saga, Spanish football powerhouses FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are vying for the signature of Manchester City’s star midfielder, Rodri, who also captains the Spanish national team. Reports from English media indicate that Barcelona made an initial bid of approximately €45 million (around Rs. 496 crore) for the 30-year-old player on August 7, but this offer was swiftly turned down by City. Despite Rodri entering the final year of his contract, Manchester City is holding out for a hefty €80 million (approximately Rs. 881 crore) to part ways with the midfielder, a figure both clubs are acutely aware of.

Real Madrid was the first to express interest in Rodri, initiating discussions in the last week of July. They reportedly engaged in advanced negotiations with Manchester City, although their attempts to secure the player have also met with rejection. Sources suggest that Rodri has opted against extending his contract with City, favoring a return to Spain, with Madrid being his preferred destination. However, negotiations have stalled since early August, as Madrid has struggled to finalize the deal despite being close to an agreement.

On August 6, news emerged that Barcelona was actively pursuing Rodri, with the midfielder reportedly leaning towards a move to the Camp Nou. The allure of reuniting with several of his World Cup-winning teammates, who have been in contact with him to advocate for the move, adds to the appeal of joining Barcelona over their fierce rivals. The Catalan club has been in need of additional midfield strength, a requirement that has intensified following a long-term injury to Frenkie de Jong.

Rodri is widely regarded as one of the top deep-lying midfielders globally, known for his exceptional ability to win possession, maintain control, and dictate the pace of the game.
