As the series approaches, India is positioned fifth in the World Test Championship standings, while Sri Lanka holds the sixth spot. India last participated in a Test match in June against Afghanistan, and a strong performance in Sri Lanka could significantly bolster their chances of reaching the championship final. The series will also mark the debut of Subhadeep Ghosh as India's fielding coach, following the non-renewal of contracts for T Dilip and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.
