In the voting process for the Executive Committee, Bhupathi secured the highest support among all candidates, polling 23 votes. Mirza also earned a seat on the committee after receiving 18 votes. The election saw other notable candidates fall short, with Janaki Krishnamoorthy recording 13 votes and Vishal Uppal finishing with seven.
Strengthening Governance Through Athlete Representation
The path to the Executive Committee began with the election of SOM representatives to the General Body. Under the amended AITA constitution, this group consists of four members—two men and two women—selected from a 40-member roster of former players established under the National Sports Governance Act. In that initial ballot, Bhupathi and Mirza were elected alongside Ashutosh Singh and Shalini Thakur Chawla, who received 17 and 16 votes respectively.
Reflecting on the turnout, Bhupathi noted the significance of the participation from the sporting community. He highlighted that 31 SOM members cast their votes, with some traveling from as far as Hong Kong to participate. Bhupathi expressed optimism regarding the potential for structural change, stating that his and Mirza's presence in the Executive Committee would allow them to implement improvements more effectively.
Commitment to Future Development
While Bhupathi and Mirza have secured their positions on the Executive Committee, it has been confirmed that they will not be running for office-bearer roles in the upcoming AITA elections. The inclusion of these high-profile former players is part of a broader initiative to integrate accomplished athletes into the administrative decision-making processes of national sports federations.
Other elected representatives have also voiced their commitment to the role. Shalini Thakur Chawla expressed her intention to contribute to the growth of the sport and represent the interests of the community. Similarly, current Davis Cup coach Ashutosh Singh described his election as both an honour and a responsibility, emphasizing his desire to work collectively with the board to enhance opportunities for players and coaches across India.
