Anastasia Zakharova moved into the next stage of the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Thursday, delivering a clinical performance to defeat Indian wild card Vaishnavi Adkar. The Russian world number 107 dictated play from the baseline, securing a 6-3, 6-0 victory in a match that lasted just over an hour at the SDAT Stadium.

For Adkar, the match marked a difficult conclusion to her campaign after she had previously secured a maiden Tour-level victory against Jodie Burrage. Despite a spirited effort in the opening stages, the 21-year-old Indian struggled to maintain pace with Zakharova’s movement and precise backhand, eventually succumbing to the pressure in front of the home crowd.

A match of missed opportunities and injury struggles

The first set saw Adkar attempt to challenge the higher-ranked Russian, though she frequently found herself on the back foot. After dropping serve in the third game, Adkar pushed Zakharova through several lengthy deuce games but failed to convert her opportunities. A pivotal moment occurred in the fifth game, where the Indian surged to a 40-0 lead on her opponent's serve, only for Zakharova to recover and hold firm.

The physical toll of the contest became apparent as the set progressed. Trailing 2-5, Adkar required a medical timeout to have her left thigh strapped. While she managed to break the Russian’s serve shortly after returning to the court—her seventh break point of the set—her momentum was short-lived. Zakharova immediately broke back to seal the first set 6-3 in 59 minutes.

Dominance in the second set

The second set proved to be a one-sided affair as Adkar’s physical limitations hindered her movement. The Indian managed to win only four of the 26 points played during the second set, which concluded in just 23 minutes. Zakharova’s efficiency ensured a swift progression to the next round, while the tournament continues with Maaya Rajeshwaran remaining as the sole Indian representative in the draw.

Elsewhere at the Chennai Open, Magda Linette defeated Moyuka Uchijima 7-6(5), 6-0, while Lucrezia Stefanini secured a 6-2, 6-3 win over Simona Waltert. In a closely contested match, Mai Hontama overcame Zhibek Kulambayeva in three sets, finishing 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
