Tennis icons Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza have been selected as Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit for the All India Tennis Association’s executive committee following recent governance reforms.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza Named as AITA Executive Committee Members

Indian tennis legends Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza are poised to join the All India Tennis Association (AITA) executive committee. The duo has been designated as the Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) for the 15-member committee, which is scheduled to be established later this year following the upcoming association elections.

The selection process, which concluded on Thursday, saw the two stars chosen from a pool of 40 candidates. In addition to their roles on the executive committee, Bhupathi and Mirza have also been named among four SOM representatives appointed to the AITA General Body. They will be joined in the General Body by current Davis Cup coach Ashutosh Singh and former Billie Jean King Cup captain Shalini Thakur Chawla.

Governance Reforms and Constitutional Changes

These appointments follow significant amendments to the AITA Constitution, which were implemented in July to align the organization with the National Sports Governance Act. The updated framework mandates the inclusion of four SOM representatives within the General Body—comprising two men and two women—and two representatives within the executive committee, consisting of one male and one female member.

By accepting these positions, Bhupathi and Mirza are precluded from contesting elections for other key office-bearer roles, such as president, general secretary, or treasurer. While the structure of the new committee is taking shape, the broader administrative landscape remains subject to ongoing legal scrutiny.

Legal Challenges and Court Proceedings

The future of AITA governance is currently being influenced by developments in the Delhi High Court. A hearing is scheduled for Friday regarding a request from administrator Justice (retd.) Gita Mittal. The administrator has sought to implead the AITA Trust and the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) in relation to allegations of corruption.

Furthermore, the court is set to address a contempt petition filed against the current interim office-bearers of the AITA. The petition alleges that these officials have engaged in the active obstruction and suppression of information from the court-appointed administrator, adding a layer of uncertainty to the upcoming transition period for the national tennis body.
