Suhail Ahmad Bhat Brace Leads India to SAFF Championship Victory Over Pakistan

Defending champions India launched their SAFF Championship campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in a Group B encounter at Dhaka’s National Stadium. The match was defined by a clinical first-half performance from forward Suhail Ahmad Bhat, whose quick-fire double provided the foundation for India’s success in the tournament opener.

Under the guidance of Under-23 coach Naushad Moosa, India dominated the opening period, establishing a commanding 3-0 lead by the interval. While Pakistan mounted a late resurgence with two goals in stoppage time, the initial damage proved insurmountable, allowing India to secure all three points in their first outing of the competition.

Dominant First Half Sets the Tone

India’s tactical approach focused on patient build-up play and midfield control, with Abhishek Suryavanshi anchoring the team from a deeper position. Although an early effort from Bhat in the 12th minute was ruled out for offside following an aerial delivery from Manglenthang Kipgen, the forward quickly made amends. Just one minute later, Muhammad Suhail initiated a move from a throw-in on the left flank, driving forward to deliver a precise cross that Bhat converted from close range.

Bhat continued his momentum in the 19th minute, doubling his tally and India’s lead. The momentum remained firmly with the defending champions as Kipgen added a third goal in the 31st minute, seemingly putting the result beyond doubt. However, Pakistan refused to surrender, eventually finding the net through Najeeb Ullah in the 90+1 minute and Alamgir Ghazi in the 90+4 minute to narrow the final margin.

Squad Challenges and Tournament Context

The fixture presented unique challenges for both sides, as the match fell outside the official FIFA international window of November 9 to 17. Consequently, both teams were forced to navigate squad limitations. Coach Moosa had only 17 players available for the selection, as several Indian Super League clubs had not yet released their players for the tournament.

The situation is expected to improve for India’s upcoming match against the Maldives on November 11, with the squad size projected to increase to 28 players as clubs release their personnel. Pakistan also faced availability issues, notably missing Danish-born defender Abdullah Iqbal, who plays for Mjällby AIF in Sweden. India’s senior squad is currently preparing for international friendlies against New Zealand, scheduled for November 12 and 15.
