Sarfaraz Khan’s spectacular catch sparks Mumbai’s late surge to victory over Railways

Mumbai maintained their dominant form in the Ranji Trophy Group D, securing a 106-run victory over Railways on Thursday. The 42-time champions appeared to be facing a potential draw as the match entered its final stages, but a moment of brilliance in the field shifted the momentum decisively in their favor.

Railways had mounted a spirited resistance through a 167-run sixth-wicket partnership between opener Eshaan Goyal, who scored 103, and Zubair Ali, who contributed 115. The pair frustrated the Mumbai attack for 156 minutes, facing 212 deliveries and keeping their side firmly in the contest until the final hour of the day.

Sarfaraz Khan turns the tide

The turning point arrived when Sarfaraz Khan produced a remarkable piece of fielding to dismiss Goyal. Attempting a sweep against Musheer Khan, the opener managed only a top edge. Sarfaraz, stationed at first slip, sprinted across to the leg-slip position and dived full length to complete a stunning catch. The dismissal ended the stubborn partnership and triggered a collapse that saw Railways bowled out for 265.

Following the breakthrough, Mumbai quickly capitalized on the opening. Suryansh Shedge completed a difficult catch at mid-off to remove Zubair off the bowling of Musheer, who finished with figures of 3/42. Shortly after, Tanush Kotian secured a one-handed catch at short midwicket to dismiss the eighth batter, effectively sealing the result. Shams Mulani had earlier provided the initial pressure, claiming 4/69 to leave Railways reeling at 83/5 before the middle-order recovery.

Mumbai eyes further success

The day began with Mumbai extending their overnight lead to set a target of 372. Divyaansh Saxena anchored the effort, remaining unbeaten on 100 from 136 balls, an innings that included eight boundaries and a six. With this win, Mumbai concluded the first round of the tournament with 27 points, the highest tally across all groups.

Reflecting on the tense final session, Mumbai captain Siddesh Lad acknowledged that the prospect of a draw had been a concern, particularly given the team's recent history in the Irani Cup. Despite the strong start to their campaign, Lad emphasized that the squad remains focused on the long-term goal. He noted that while the team has performed well in the league stage, they are determined to build on their legacy and continue their momentum throughout the remainder of the season.
