Cricket Australia has secured the services of former international batter
Hussey’s appointment follows a period of speculation regarding his future in international coaching. The 51-year-old had previously disclosed in August that he was informally approached by England’s red-ball coach, Stephen Fleming, to join their setup as a batting mentor. Ultimately, Hussey declined that interest, opting instead to bolster the Australian coaching ranks following the team's recent 2-1 Test series loss in South Africa.
A long-term commitment to Australian cricket
The scope of Hussey’s new role is extensive, covering both immediate and long-term objectives. Beyond the Ashes and the 2027 World Cup, his remit includes assisting the coaching staff during the upcoming home T20 series against England and the four-Test series against New Zealand. Furthermore, his involvement is set to stretch into 2028, with commitments confirmed for the T20 World Cup and the cricket competition at the Los Angeles Olympics.
Reflecting on his return to the national setup, Hussey expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to contribute to the squad's development. Having represented Australia in over 300 international matches, he brings a wealth of experience to the role. He noted that he hopes to add significant value to both the coaching and playing groups as the team navigates a challenging period of international fixtures.
Expertise and coaching pedigree
Hussey arrives with a proven track record in coaching across various global environments. His resume includes a stint with the England team during their 2022 T20 World Cup victory, as well as a long-standing tenure as the batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, where he worked alongside Fleming. Additionally, he served as the coach for Welsh Fire during the most recent edition of The Hundred.
