Alexander Zverev maintained his pursuit of a second Grand Slam title on Wednesday, delivering a clinical performance to reach the US Open semifinals. The world number two dispatched Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets, winning 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium to remain firmly in contention at the tournament.

The German, who claimed his first major trophy at the French Open earlier this June, controlled the match from the outset. While his opponent, ranked 70th in the world, attempted to mount a challenge during the second set, Zverev’s composure proved decisive in closing out the contest in straight sets.

Zverev Overcomes Mid-Match Challenge

The opening set saw Zverev establish dominance early, breaking his opponent twice to take control of the momentum. However, the contest tightened in the second set as van de Zandschulp found his rhythm. The Dutchman pushed the world number two to the brink, earning a set point while leading 5-4 on Zverev’s serve.

Zverev responded under pressure, forcing an error from van de Zandschulp to save the set point and level the score at 5-5. Capitalizing on the shift in momentum, Zverev secured a crucial break in the following game after a wayward forehand from the Dutchman. A comfortable hold of serve followed, allowing Zverev to take a commanding two-set lead.

Path to the Final Four

With the second set secured, the resistance from van de Zandschulp faded in the third. Zverev quickly established a double-break advantage to lead 4-1, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback. He broke his opponent once more in the seventh game to seal the victory and confirm his place in the final four.

Zverev, who previously reached the US Open final in 2020, will now prepare for his semifinal showdown on Friday. He is set to face unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov, with a place in the championship match on the line. The 29-year-old enters the next round with significant momentum following his efficient display against the Dutchman.
