Indian shooting coaches prioritize process over medal expectations ahead of Asian Games

With the Asian Games approaching, the Indian shooting contingent is shifting its focus toward process-driven preparation rather than the weight of external expectations. Following a highly successful showing at the 2023 edition, where the team secured an impressive haul of 22 medals, the pressure to replicate or surpass that performance is significant. However, the coaching staff is actively working to insulate the athletes from these outside pressures.

The squad is currently undergoing a rigorous preparatory camp at the MP Shooting Academy in Bhopal. According to the team's leadership, the primary objective is to ensure each athlete operates at their peak potential, trusting that the results will naturally follow if the technical and mental processes are executed correctly.

NRAI High Performance Director Pierre Beauchamp echoed this sentiment, stressing the psychological necessity of remaining grounded. He argued that dwelling on past achievements or worrying about future expectations can be detrimental to performance. By focusing strictly on the present, the coaching team aims to provide athletes with the necessary coping strategies to handle the intense pressure inherent in major international competitions.

Pandit reinforced this by reminding the shooters that the mechanics of the sport remain constant regardless of the environment. He explained that a firearm does not recognize the gravity of the occasion or the prestige of the tournament. By focusing on the specific steps required to release a shot effectively, athletes can maintain their composure and perform with the same precision they demonstrate in practice.
