Indian Judokas Set for High-Level Training Camp in Japan Ahead of Major International Events

A group of 11 Indian judokas is set to undergo an intensive month-long training camp at Tsukuba University in Japan. The initiative, which has received official approval from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), is designed to provide the athletes with crucial international exposure ahead of their upcoming appearances at the Asian Games and the World Championships.

The training programme is scheduled to run from September 5 to October 2, offering the squad a dedicated period to refine their skills in a high-performance environment. The contingent heading to Japan includes 10 female judokas and one male athlete, supported by a team of three coaches.

Preparation for Asian Games and World Championships

The camp serves as a vital preparation phase for two major international competitions. For the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, the Indian contingent will feature Commonwealth Games champion Asmita Dey in the 48kg category, alongside Yamini Mourya in the 57kg division and Inunganbi Takhellambam in the 70kg category.

Following the conclusion of the training camp, the focus will shift toward the World Championships, which are scheduled to begin on October 4 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The squad for the World Championships features a broader representation of Indian talent. Harsh Singh, the Commonwealth Games 60kg champion, is the sole male judoka selected for the elite event. Currently ranked 84th globally, Singh will be looking to make his mark on the world stage.

The full women's squad for the World Championships includes Asmita Dey (48kg), Shraddha Chopade, L. Nungshithoi Chanu (both 52kg), Yamini Mourya (57kg), Linthoi Chanambam, Unnati Sharma, Himanshi Tokas (all 63kg), Takhelambam Inunganbi, K.H. Taibanganbi (both 70kg), and Ishroop Narang (78kg). This comprehensive training stint in Japan is expected to play a significant role in the athletes' readiness for the competitive demands of both the Asian Games and the World Championships.
