Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones Sr. has avoided a significant knee injury following Sunday’s contest against the Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Kevin O'Connell provided the update on Monday, confirming that the veteran is currently considered day-to-day as the team prepares for their upcoming matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Jones sustained the injury during the fourth quarter of the Vikings' 16-10 victory. While attempting a 17-yard run down the right sideline with 12:22 remaining, he was hit on his left leg by Colts safety A.J. Haulcy. Jones finished the game with 26 yards on eight carries, having started the contest and taken the opening four carries before teammate Jordan Mason took over the primary workload.

Evaluating backfield depth and future plans

Despite ongoing speculation regarding potential trades for veteran running backs, O'Connell indicated that the team is not currently looking to add depth at the position. The head coach noted that he plans to meet with general manager Nolan Teasley this week to discuss the roster, as is standard procedure, but expressed confidence in the current group.

Regarding the immediate outlook, O'Connell stated that the team does not view the running back situation as a depth issue at this stage, though he acknowledged that the status of the roster could shift as the week progresses. Jones has been managing a sprained MCL in his left knee for much of the season, a factor that has influenced the team's rotation.

Rotation and roster context

The Vikings' backfield has seen a shifting dynamic throughout the season. Jordan Mason, who had been sidelined with a fractured thumb, returned to action on Sunday and led the team with 15 carries for 68 yards. Prior to Mason's return, Jones had served as the primary back for four games.

The team’s depth chart also includes rookie Demond Claiborne and veteran DeeJay Dallas. However, usage for the reserves has been limited; Claiborne has been inactive for both games in which Jones and Mason were both available, while he and Dallas have combined for only nine carries across the other games this season.
