Manchester United Identify Potential Successors to Michael Carrick Amid Poor Start

Manchester United have begun the process of identifying potential successors to head coach Michael Carrick as pressure mounts following a challenging start to the current campaign. With the club’s form under scrutiny, reports indicate that internal assessments are underway to determine who might take charge should the current leadership be dismissed.

The uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s future has been compounded by recent results, including a 3-0 home defeat to 17th-placed Bournemouth, which saw fans at Old Trafford direct their frustrations toward the players. Furthermore, senior figures within the squad, including Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes, have reportedly raised questions regarding the team’s direction and coaching following consecutive losses.

Leading Contenders and Managerial Candidates

Among the names currently being considered, former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and German coach Julian Nagelsmann have emerged as prominent figures on the club's shortlist. Howe, who departed St James’ Park in July, is reportedly open to the prospect of taking the role. His tenure at Newcastle was marked by significant success, including securing the League Cup in 2025—the club’s first major trophy in 56 years—and achieving two Champions League qualifications.

Nagelsmann, 39, is also available following his departure from the Germany national team setup. His extensive resume includes managerial stints at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich, where he secured the Bundesliga title in 2022. The club is also monitoring Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea, Tottenham, and Napoli manager, who is reportedly interested in the position. Conte brings a wealth of experience, having secured league titles in Italy with Juventus, Inter Milan, and Napoli, alongside a Premier League triumph with Chelsea in 2017.

Long-term Targets and Future Direction

The search extends to coaches currently under contract, with Aston Villa’s Unai Emery identified as a candidate of interest. However, securing Emery would present logistical challenges given his current deal, which runs until 2029. Emery has established a strong reputation at Villa, having guided the club to two Champions League qualifications since his arrival in 2022, adding to his record of five Europa League titles.

Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler and Como’s Cesc Fabregas have also been noted for their recent achievements. Hurzeler has earned praise for his work at Brighton, while Fabregas has garnered attention for his role in guiding Como from Serie B to the Champions League. Should Manchester United decide to part ways with Carrick, the incoming appointment would become the club’s eighth permanent manager or head coach since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, tasked with the immediate challenge of restoring stability and consistency to the squad.
