Chennai Super Kings Overhaul Coaching Staff Ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings have commenced a significant restructuring of their backroom team as they prepare for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The five-time champions are moving in a new direction following the appointment of former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach, a move that signals the end of the long-standing tenure of his predecessor, Stephen Fleming.

The franchise confirmed that several prominent members of the support staff will not return for the upcoming campaign. Among the departures is batting coach Mike Hussey, who has been a central figure in the organization since 2018. Hussey, who also represented the team as a player for six seasons, was thanked by the franchise for his dedication and mentorship, with the team acknowledging his lasting impact on the club's history.

A New Era Under Zaheer Khan

The coaching shake-up extends beyond the batting department, with bowling coach Eric Simons also departing the setup. Reports indicate that former India pacer Mohit Sharma is expected to join the new-look support staff under Zaheer Khan’s leadership. Additionally, the franchise has parted ways with assistant coach Rajiv Kumar and fielding coach James Foster.

The changes are not limited to the coaching ranks, as the team has also opted to move on from long-serving support personnel, including physio Tommy Simsek and strength and conditioning coach Gregory King. In a move to bolster the new coaching structure, former England spinner Gareth Batty has been appointed as an assistant coach. The 49-year-old, who previously worked alongside Zaheer Khan at Worcestershire, brings international experience to the role.

Addressing Recent Performance Slump

This comprehensive transition follows a challenging three-year period for the Chennai franchise. After securing the IPL title in 2023, the team struggled to maintain its high standards, finishing fifth in 2024, 10th in 2025, and eighth in the 2026 season. These results prompted the end of the franchise's lengthy association with Fleming, who has since transitioned to a role with the England Test team.

With Zaheer Khan now at the helm, the 2027 season will serve as his first assignment as head coach. The management is clearly looking to revitalize the squad and its support systems as they aim to return to the competitive form that defined their history in the tournament.
