Shedeur Sanders to start for Browns against Saints as Watson remains questionable

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has officially cleared the NFL's concussion protocol, yet his status for Sunday's matchup against the New Orleans Saints remains uncertain. Despite the positive development in his recovery, the team has opted to move forward with a change at the signal-caller position for the upcoming contest.

Browns coach Todd Monken confirmed on Friday that Shedeur Sanders will receive the start against New Orleans. The decision comes after a week of uncertainty regarding the quarterback room, following Watson's decision to self-report concussion symptoms on Tuesday morning, which necessitated his placement in the league's mandatory protocol.

Sanders steps into starting role

Shedeur Sanders, who took all the first-team repetitions during practice throughout the week, is set to lead the offense on Sunday. The rookie-turned-sophomore has seen limited action this season, having attempted just three passes across two appearances. His experience as a starter is limited to his debut campaign last year, where he recorded a 3-4 record across seven starts. During that rookie season, Sanders completed 56.6 percent of his passes, accumulating 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

With Sanders confirmed as the starter, the team's depth chart for the remainder of the game remains fluid. It is currently unclear whether Watson will be available to serve as the backup, or if that role will be filled by either Dillon Gabriel or Taylen Green. The Browns enter the weekend with a 5-3 record, looking to maintain their momentum as they navigate this mid-season roster adjustment.

Following the game against the Saints, Cleveland is scheduled to host the Houston Texans in Week 10. That matchup will serve as the team's final outing before they head into their mid-season bye week. The organization will continue to monitor Watson's status as he transitions out of the protocol and prepares for the upcoming stretch of the schedule.
