CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Brooks, who has undergone two ACL surgeries on his right knee, had not participated in any NFL training camp practices until July 22. His upcoming appearance will provide him with the opportunity to demonstrate his skills in a live game setting. "He's in great shape; he's ready to rock — he's ready to play football," Canales stated. The coach indicated that Brooks will be integrated into the first team, sharing carries with fellow running back Chuba Hubbard, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate both players during the game.
As a rookie, Brooks played in three games before suffering a re-injury to his right ACL during a matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. His time on the field has been limited due to the surgeries that kept him sidelined during his first two offseasons. In the upcoming preseason opener, Brooks will team up with Hubbard, as many of the Panthers' starters are expected to make their exhibition debuts.
Injury Updates and Team Dynamics
Behind Brooks on the depth chart are Trevor Etienne, a fourth-round pick from 2025, veteran AJ Dillon, practice-squad player Anthony Tyus III, and undrafted rookie Miles Davis. Canales also provided updates on other players, noting that wide receiver Xavier Legette, who is recovering from a stinger sustained earlier in camp, is unlikely to participate against the Bills. Although Legette caught a "walk-off touchdown" from quarterback Bryce Young during Wednesday's practice, Canales emphasized that he is not yet at the required conditioning level for game action. "It was good to see him back out there, playing like himself and playing fast," Canales remarked, expressing confidence in Legette's potential impact once fully fit.
Additionally, left guard Damien Lewis, who returned to practice after a lengthy absence due to a calf injury, is also expected to miss the game against Buffalo. Canales confirmed that while Lewis is making progress, he will not be ready for the upcoming matchup.
