India Faces FIFA Sanction Threat If It Withdraws From ASEAN Cup to Play Brazil Friendly

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is currently grappling with a significant scheduling conflict regarding India's involvement in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup. The tournament's final is set for October 3, which coincides with a highly anticipated friendly match against Brazil in Kolkata. As the federation awaits clarification from FIFA on the possibility of fielding separate teams for both events, the situation remains precarious.

India has been placed in Group A of Division 1, also known as the Premier Division, alongside teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The ASEAN Cup is scheduled to run from September 24 to October 3 in Indonesia, with India slated to play three group matches leading up to the final. During an executive committee meeting on August 6, the AIFF had resolved to participate in both the ASEAN Cup and the friendly against Brazil, proposing the use of distinct squads for each event. However, this plan has encountered hurdles due to FIFA regulations, which prohibit a nation from entering a FIFA-sanctioned tournament with an Under-23 or reserve team. Consequently, India cannot simply dispatch a secondary squad to the ASEAN Cup while the senior team competes against Brazil.

This decision has sparked criticism from Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia, who emphasized the importance of fielding the strongest team possible in the ASEAN Cup. In defense of its choice to play Brazil, the AIFF has characterized the match as a "unique opportunity" for Indian players to gain invaluable experience against one of the top footballing nations globally. The federation has indicated its intention to formally approach FIFA to seek approval for its plan to utilize separate squads.

As the AIFF awaits FIFA's response, it is actively exploring solutions that would allow it to maintain the Brazil fixture while adhering to FIFA's regulations. A withdrawal from the ASEAN Cup could result in serious repercussions, including potential financial penalties, complicating matters further for the federation. Additionally, the scheduling issues may extend into November, with proposed friendlies against New Zealand possibly conflicting with the SAFF Championship. For the time being, the AIFF is focused on resolving the October scheduling conflict and finalizing India's international calendar, striving to balance competitive obligations with the opportunity to face Brazil.
