Penix’s return to the field comes after a lengthy recovery process following a torn left ACL suffered in Week 11 of last season. The 26-year-old underwent reconstructive surgery followed by a secondary procedure to further stabilize the joint. Although he received medical clearance to participate in full practice sessions in late August, he opted to delay his return until he felt fully prepared for the rigors of live game action.
Navigating a Quarterback Crisis
The decision to start Penix follows a turbulent opening stretch for the Falcons' quarterback room. The team initially entered the season with Tua Tagovailoa as the starter, but an oblique injury sustained during practice sidelined him, forcing the team to rely on Cooper Rush. Rush struggled to find rhythm while managing back spasms, completing 22-of-39 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown, four interceptions, and a lost fumble across two appearances.
The situation reached a breaking point during Sunday’s 34-3 defeat to the Carolina Panthers. Rush was benched in the third quarter in favor of undrafted rookie Jack Strand. Strand’s debut proved difficult, as he threw a pick-six on his very first career pass attempt. He finished the game 8-of-15 for 59 yards with no touchdowns and that lone interception. Strand’s unfortunate start marked the first time a Falcons quarterback had thrown a pick-six on their first career pass since Brett Favre in 1991.
Looking Ahead to Thursday
As Penix prepares for his first start since his injury, the team is hoping for a steady hand to guide the offense. Drafted No. 8 overall by Atlanta in 2024, Penix previously stepped into the starting role late last season following the departure of Kirk Cousins. Throughout his two-season career, which includes 12 starts, he has completed 59.6% of his passes for 2,757 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
The Falcons will look to leverage Penix’s experience to turn their season around when they face the Packers on Thursday night.
