Kyren Williams points to workload as Rams struggle with consistency

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams has pointed toward his own usage as a potential factor in the team's fluctuating energy levels during their recent 18-16 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals. When questioned about the team's inconsistent performance on a drive-by-drive basis during Sunday's loss, Williams offered a candid assessment of the situation, suggesting that his time on the sidelines might be contributing to the lack of momentum.

The loss in Inglewood dropped the Rams to a 2-4 record for the season. While Williams remains a central figure in the offense, he has been sharing backfield duties with rookie Blake Corum, a third-round selection in the 2024 draft. During Sunday’s contest, Williams logged 40 offensive snaps, recording 10 carries for 50 yards alongside three receptions for 17 yards. In comparison, Corum saw 16 snaps, contributing nine carries for 42 yards and two catches for 18 yards, including a touchdown.

McVay addresses self-inflicted errors

Head coach Sean McVay expressed significant frustration following the result, which saw the Cardinals pull off a major upset as 13.5-point underdogs. McVay emphasized that the team is currently struggling with unforced errors, penalties, and a general lack of execution that is preventing them from securing victories. He noted that the team is failing to get out of its own way, with various players contributing to the ongoing issues.

McVay acknowledged that he does not currently have a solution for the recurring mistakes, stating that it is his responsibility to rectify the situation. He admitted that the team's current narrative of self-inflicted wounds is unsustainable and that he needs to provide better leadership to ensure the squad is properly aligned. The coach was blunt in his assessment, stating there was nothing positive to take away from the performance against Arizona.

The Rams now face a difficult path in the NFC West, currently trailing the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers. Statistical projections from NFL NextGen Stats suggest the team has a 43% chance of reaching the playoffs. Furthermore, the Rams have become only the fifth team in the last 50 seasons to start a campaign as outright Super Bowl favorites only to lose four of their first six games. None of the previous four teams to face this scenario managed to reach their respective conference championship games.
