San Francisco 49ers survive late Washington Commanders rally to remain unbeaten

The San Francisco 49ers maintained their perfect start to the season, moving to 6-0 after fending off a determined second-half surge from the Washington Commanders. While the 49ers appeared to be in total control with a 20-point lead at halftime, the momentum shifted dramatically following an injury to wide receiver Mike Evans, forcing the home side to scramble in the closing stages to preserve a 23-17 win.

The victory was ultimately secured by a resilient defensive stand. With Washington threatening to snatch an upset win in the final moments, safety Malik Mustapha broke up a crucial fourth-down pass at the goal line. Shortly after, a game-clinching sack by Romello Height and Keion White extinguished the Commanders' hopes, allowing San Francisco to escape with their undefeated record intact.

Injury concerns and offensive adjustments

The game’s narrative changed when Evans, who had been managing a sore right Achilles, exited the contest after a 16-yard reception. His departure left the 49ers’ receiving corps severely depleted, as the team is already navigating absences for Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson, and Christian Kirk. The remaining receivers struggled to find rhythm, combining for just two catches and 35 yards in Evans' absence.

Quarterback Brock Purdy, who reached a milestone of 1,500 career passes during the opening drive, finished the night 21-of-29 for 264 yards and one touchdown. With the passing game hampered by the injury, the 49ers leaned heavily on running back Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey responded with his most productive outing of the season, recording 25 touches for 117 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns, though he did surrender a fumble deep in Washington territory.

Commanders' second-half resurgence

Washington entered the locker room facing a 20-3 deficit but emerged as a transformed side after the break. Quarterback Jayden Daniels spearheaded the comeback, completing 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and two second-half touchdowns. The Commanders' defense also tightened significantly, limiting San Francisco to just 64 yards and three points in the second half, a stark improvement after allowing 303 yards in the first two quarters.

Despite the loss, the performance provided a morale boost for Washington, particularly regarding the play of Daniels. Conversely, the 49ers face lingering questions regarding their special teams unit. Punter Jacob Cowing muffed a punt inside his own 5-yard line, and kicker Eddy Pineiro missed an extra point, marking his sixth missed kick of the season. San Francisco will look to address these inconsistencies ahead of their upcoming road game against the Atlanta Falcons, while Washington prepares for a home clash against the Philadelphia Eagles following their bye week.
