The play was significant as it prevented New England from narrowing Jacksonville’s 14-3 lead just before halftime. Following the turnover, Hunter celebrated with a spin and a dance, but the aftermath quickly turned into an unexpected confrontation on the sidelines.
Sideline dispute follows rookie milestone
Footage of the incident, which has since circulated widely online, shows an NFL ball boy retrieving the ball and refusing to hand it over to Hines-Allen. When the Jaguars defender attempted to take the ball, the ball boy was heard shouting, "Hey, you can't touch me!" The situation escalated briefly as Hines-Allen attempted to knock the ball from the staffer's hands, prompting the ball boy to claim he had been pushed. Jacksonville equipment manager George Pellicer eventually intervened to de-escalate the situation and attempt to retrieve the ball.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen addressed the matter during a media call on Monday, acknowledging that the team is still seeking clarity on whether the ball Hunter eventually received was indeed the one used during the play. While NFL players are permitted to keep game balls, they are typically subject to league fees for doing so. Coen noted that the team has been in communication with the relevant parties to resolve the issue.
"I haven't gotten a clean answer," Coen stated regarding the status of the ball. "We've been in communication with those guys over there. I think they've gotten it sorted out; I can't say for certain if we got the actual ball or not. I know there was something that went on there. I think it's all squared away. We'll get it taken care of."
For his part, Hunter credited the team's defensive preparation for the successful play. "The coach did a great job scheming it up for us," Hunter said following the game. "He called the perfect call for us. We all talked and we communicated on my side of the ball, and I just made it happen."
