The Los Angeles Clippers will be without forward Brandon Ingram for the beginning of the 2026-27 NBA season. The 29-year-old is currently sidelined as he recovers from a surgical procedure to treat a right heel injury, which also revealed a previously undisclosed partially torn Achilles tendon.

Interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden confirmed the news during the team's media day on Monday. While the initial surgery took place in May, the extent of the Achilles issue was only fully identified during the medical process. Consequently, there is currently no definitive timeline for when the two-time All-Star will be cleared to return to competitive action.

Recovery process and team impact

Redden noted that while the recovery period for a partially torn Achilles is significant, it is estimated to be approximately six months shorter than the rehabilitation required for a complete tear. The Clippers medical staff discovered the injury after the team acquired Ingram from the Toronto Raptors earlier this month in a trade involving Kawhi Leonard.

The forward originally sustained the heel injury while playing for Toronto, forcing him to miss the final two games of their first-round playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Redden explained that the team gained a clearer understanding of Ingram's physical progression only after he arrived in Los Angeles. The organization plans to reevaluate his status as his rehabilitation continues.

Ingram, who averaged 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists last season, is expected to serve as a primary scoring option for the Clippers upon his return. Teammate Darius Garland expressed optimism about their future chemistry, highlighting the potential of their pick-and-roll partnership once Ingram is healthy. In addition to Ingram's absence, the team confirmed that guard Bradley Beal will miss the start of training camp due to right knee inflammation, following his previous surgery on his left hip.
