Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. sustained a rib injury during the final moments of Sunday night’s 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Despite the setback, the rookie signal-caller expressed optimism regarding his recovery, stating he does not anticipate the issue will sideline him for an extended period.

The injury occurred with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation as the score remained deadlocked. Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson sacked Penix, leaving the quarterback on the turf for a brief period. Although Penix managed to walk off the field under his own power, he was replaced for a single play by backup Tua Tagovailoa before briefly returning to the huddle. Ultimately, the Falcons were forced to punt, sending the contest into overtime, where Penix remained on the sideline.

Injury impact and recovery outlook

Penix noted that his physical condition deteriorated while sitting on the bench during the Ravens' lengthy opening drive in the extra period. The cooling effect of the sideline environment caused his discomfort to intensify, preventing his return to the field. Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that the medical staff monitored the quarterback’s inability to find comfort while seated, which ultimately ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

Reflecting on the situation, Penix expressed frustration at being unable to contribute during the decisive moments of the game. He emphasized his commitment to the training room, stating his intention to be ready for the team's next fixture. Teammate Bijan Robinson echoed the team's support, noting that the entire roster is hopeful the injury is limited to a bruise.

Before his departure, Penix had completed 19 of 32 pass attempts for 240 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception. His performance on Sunday followed a productive stretch for the Falcons' offense, which had recorded 80 points across his previous two starts. The team had previously struggled during the opening two weeks of the season while navigating injuries to both Penix and Tagovailoa, relying on Cooper Rush to lead the offense. As the Falcons look ahead, the focus remains on the recovery of their starting quarterback following his return from earlier season health challenges.
