Jahmyr Gibbs eclipses Barry Sanders' record in Lions' dominant win over Cardinals

Jahmyr Gibbs has etched his name into the Detroit Lions' record books, surpassing franchise icon Barry Sanders for the most NFL touchdowns scored before the age of 25. The 24-year-old running back reached the milestone during a commanding 45-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, moving his career total to 58 touchdowns.

The historic moment arrived with 5:03 remaining in the fourth quarter when Gibbs showcased his trademark agility, bouncing off a defender before reversing field for his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon. The play extended Detroit's lead to 45-14 and capped a stellar individual performance that saw him accumulate 151 rushing yards and 56 receiving yards.

A record-breaking performance in Arizona

Gibbs, who was drafted by the Lions in 2023, has long held an affinity for Sanders, even wearing the legendary No. 20 jersey during his junior high school days in honor of the Hall of Famer. Following the game, Sanders publicly congratulated his successor on social media, noting his excitement to see another Lions player claim the record.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff praised the young running back's impact on the offense. While acknowledging that the team's run game still has room for improvement, Goff highlighted Gibbs' unique ability to evade defenders in the backfield. For his part, Gibbs attributed his success to the collective effort of his teammates, specifically crediting the blocking from his offensive line and wide receivers.

Offensive surge and defensive turnaround

The victory was fueled by a remarkable offensive turnaround. Despite a sluggish start that saw the team go three-and-out on their first three possessions, the Lions exploded for 24 points in the second quarter. Detroit went on to score on seven consecutive drives, marking the longest scoring streak by any team in the NFL this season. Goff was instrumental in the effort, completing 19-of-30 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding a rushing score.

The supporting cast also contributed significantly, with Jameson Williams recording his first two touchdowns of the season and tight end Sam LaPorta hauling in five catches for 88 yards and a score. Defensively, the Lions showed marked improvement, limiting the Cardinals to 21 points after a difficult opening drive. The win brings Detroit to a 3-2 record as they head into their bye week, with the team currently leading the league in scoring, averaging 32.8 points per game.
